Selection Process

Edinburgh University assesses each applicant using a combination of academic results, UCAT deciles, and SJT scores. The weighting for each component is as follows:

  • Academic score: 25%
  • UCAT by decile: 17.5%
  • SJT: 7.5%
  • Assessment Day/Interview: 50%
  • Applicants who achieve Band 4 (B4) in the SJT will be rejected.
  • The UCAT cutoff for 2025 entry is 2,450.

After the interview, the same weighting system is applied to give out final offers.

Personal Statement

The personal statement is not formally assessed in the selection process. However, Edinburgh suggests considering the following when writing it:

  • Personal qualities and skills
  • Evidence of career exploration
  • Non-academic achievements and interests
  • Work experience: Both virtual and in-person work experience are accepted and valued equally.

The Interview

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an assessment half-day, where they will:

  • Learn more about studying medicine at Edinburgh
  • Undergo a series of short interviews

The interview assesses core attributes required of medical doctors, as outlined in the Statement on Core Values from the Medical Schools Council.

Candidates invited for assessment day will be provided with more information about the structure of the day.

Academic Requirements

  • A-Levels: AAA, including Chemistry and one from Biology/Human Biology, Mathematics/Further Mathematics, or Physics. Only one of Mathematics or Further Mathematics will be considered. Only one of Biology or Human Biology will be considered.
  • GCSEs:
    • Biology, Chemistry, English, and Maths at Grade A or 7.
    • Double Award Combined Sciences at AA/77 can replace Triple Science.
  • SQA:
    • Highers: AAAAB by the end of S5, including Chemistry and 2 from Biology, Maths, or Physics.
    • Advanced Higher: BB in S6.
    • At Nat 5s, you need Biology, Chemistry, English, and Maths at Grade B.
    • Higher Applications of Mathematics at C can replace Nat 5 Maths at B.

Resits

Resits are only accepted in exceptional circumstances and are generally not considered.
